Panoramic photos with an 8mm peleng lens

Back in 2005 I bought an 8mm peleng lens to make 360 panoramas to use as reflections maps in my 3d work. I newer really got it working and the lens has since been used for fun a few time a year. But last year I stumbled over some really good 360 panoramic photos. I was really surprised when I realised that they where shot with the 8mm peleng – and even shot handheld…

My good old Russian lens needed a 2e chance. And it really do work! Actually even better then I ever hoped for. The 2 examples here are shot handheld – the only aid was a rubber band, a pice of string and a coin with a hole in. Only 6 photos was taken; 4 at 90 degrees plus up and down. It can be done in less then 2 minutes and then home to stitch it all together in the open source software “Hugin”.

It actually worked so well that I also picked a panoramic head and started to shoot HDRI panoramas for lighting in 3d. And I even used the software to make a 246 megapixel panorama of a 170m long wall mural. More about that when I find a solution to show off a photo with those crazy dimensions.

The panoramas here are only 8-900k, but can be seen in a higer resolution at 360cities:
